Susan J. Court is the Principal of SJC Energy Consultants, LLC, and also serves as a Hearing Officer for ReliabilityFirst Corporation (a Regional Entity that oversees electric utilities' compliance with standards related to the reliability of the nation's bulk-electric system).
Until recently, she was a partner at Hogan Lovells US LLP, in Washington, D.C., where she concentrated on energy issues with a particular focus on enforcement of regulations promulgated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
Ms. Court was previously a senior lawyer and executive at FERC, which she joined in 1982. From 2005 to 2009, Ms. Court served as the agency's first Director of Enforcement following the enactment of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which literally converted FERC from an economic regulator to an enforcement agency, by greatly expanding its penalty authority and its jurisdiction in the areas of market manipulation, electric grid reliability, and natural gas and electric price transparency. Ms. Court also served as the agency's Chief of Staff, Associate General Counsel for General and Administrative Law, Designated Agency Ethics Official, Deputy Solicitor, and Associate General Counsel for Gas and Oil.
In 2005, she worked at the Irish Commission for Energy Regulation, a European Union Regulatory Authority, on assignment from FERC. Between 2005 and 2012, Ms. Court was an active committee member for the International Gas Union, and participated in or otherwise contributed to the 23rd, 24th, and 25th World Gas Conferences.
